Reaffirming its commitment to supporting educators nationwide, the Department of Education (DepEd) launched the Teacher Effectiveness and Competencies Enhancement Project (TEACEP) in partnership with the World Bank.

The project was created to support DepEd's efforts to improve teacher competency requirements and professional development through institutional transformation in Mindanao.

An estimated 57,800 K–6 instructors, 6,060 school heads, and 1.88 million K–6 pupils across all public elementary schools in three areas of Mindanao are expected to benefit from the project, which was made feasible by a loan deal with the World Bank.

Boosting education in Mindanao

According to DepEd Secretary and Vice President Sara Duterte, the program will primarily assist the Zamboanga Peninsula, Soccsksargen (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani, and General Santos City), and BARMM (Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) through the TEACEP.

“Our collective commitment to the MATATAG Agenda is stronger than ever and we have prioritized aiding the support to improve our teachers’ skills. Today, thank you to the support of the World Bank-International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and with the help of the Department of Finance," Duterte said.

Improving reading and numeracy skills will be a key component of TEACEP, an initiative to raise the standard of education and provide fair access to instruction in the aforementioned regions.

World bank’s support

“I reaffirm and reiterate the World Bank’s enthusiastic support for this crucial investment in education,” World Bank’s Country Director for Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand Dr. Ndiam? Diop said.

"This is an important project for the country that is fully aligned with the MATATAG Agenda which is a formidable guiding framework for interventions in education," Diop added.

The Philippines and the World Bank signed a USD 110 million loan deal on June 26, 2023, which went into effect on August 23, 2023.
