Davao de Oro Celebrates 19th Bulawan Festival, Honors ‘Golden People’

The province of Davao de Oro marked its 19th Bulawan (Golden) Festival with a vibrant celebration that honored not only its rich natural resources but also the people who continue to drive the province’s progress.

Held alongside the province’s 28th foundation anniversary, the festival highlighted Davao de Oro’s reputation as a land blessed with gold deposits and thriving agricultural production. But provincial leaders emphasized that the true wealth of the province lies beyond what can be mined from the ground.

Province’s “true gold” lies in its people

Governor Raul Mabanglo said the festival is a reminder that the province’s greatest treasure is its people—the communities who have worked together to build and sustain its growth.

“The true treasure of the province is not found in mining—it lies in its people,” Mabanglo said during the culmination program.

He thanked residents and stakeholders for their unity and continued support for the province through the years. The governor also commended farmers and fisherfolk for their crucial role in maintaining food security and strengthening the local economy.

“For 28 years, we have faced challenges, yet our people have shown unity, resilience and hope,” he added.

Celebrating the province’s “golden people”

Echoing the governor’s message, Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Davao Region Director Ma. Mercedes Dumagan described the residents of the province as its “bulawanong katawhan,” or golden people.

She said the festival serves as a celebration not only of prosperity but also of the shared values that guide the province’s development.

“This celebration reminds us that cultural heritage and environmental protection go hand in hand. Our traditions teach us respect for nature,” Dumagan said.

She praised the province for working toward balanced progress, pursuing economic growth while protecting the environment.

Dumagan also highlighted the wisdom of indigenous communities whose sustainable practices continue to guide environmental stewardship in the province.
