On Monday, February 10, officials kicked off the long-awaited P100-million Mati Airport Development Project, marking the beginning of significant infrastructure upgrades that will make the airport operational for smaller aircraft by 2026.

Gov. Niño Sotero Uy emphasized the importance of efficient transportation, describing it as “the lifeblood of connectivity.” He pointed out that the development of Davao Oriental has been held back by its geography, but this project will finally open up the province to greater opportunities. “Today, we celebrate the groundbreaking of a dream that has long been in the hearts of the people of Davao Oriental,” Uy said, adding that the project will serve as an economic driver for the entire region.

A Step Toward Progress for Davao Oriental

Mayor Michelle Rabat reflected on the airport’s history, noting that it has been standing since 1976 but remained underdeveloped for decades. “For years, the Mati Airport stood as a witness to the growth of our city, but now it will be a key player in our future,” Rabat said. She expressed excitement about plans to expand the airport further to accommodate larger aircraft in the future. The project, she added, is more than just about infrastructure—it’s about creating connections and opportunities for the people of Mati.

Boosting Tourism and Trade

Department of Tourism regional director Tanya Rabat-Tan highlighted how the upgraded airport will boost tourism. “This is going to be a game changer,” she said, noting that the project will open doors for new tourism opportunities and enhance trade in the region. The airport’s development will make it easier for tourists to visit and for businesses to grow, both crucial elements for the province’s economic development.

Aligned with National Goals

The Mati Airport project aligns with the Marcos administration’s Build Better More program, which aims to improve transportation infrastructure across the country. Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Davao Manager Rey Obcena called the groundbreaking a milestone event. “This is more than just a construction project; it’s the beginning of progress, opportunity, and a brighter future for Davao Oriental,” he said.
