In the heart of the Philippines lies a testament to canine heroism, a memorial that stands as a tribute to unwavering courage and selfless love. Meet Kabang, the Aspin who captured international attention for sacrificing her snout to protect her owners. Today, her statue proudly graces Zamboanga City, embodying the spirit of one of the most cherished canines in modern Philippine history.

Born on February 29, 2008, Kabang's story begins with a fortuitous discovery by Rudy Bunggal at the Zamboanga City Government dumpster. The name "Kabang," meaning "multi-color" in Cebuano, perfectly captures the black, yellow, and white patterns adorning her fur.

Kabang's Heroic Act

In 2011, when Kabang was nine years old, she bravely jumped in to save two young lives. Dina Bunggal, Rudy’s daughter, and her three-year-old cousin, Princess Diansing, were in danger as a motorcycle approached. Not realizing the peril, Kabang fearlessly stepped in, shielding the girls from harm by intercepting the oncoming vehicle. The rider and the kids only suffered slight bruises.

Triumph Over Adversity

After the brave act, Kabang suffered severe injuries, especially to her upper snout. Despite the grim outlook, her family chose not to put her down and decided to confront the challenges. Kabang underwent several surgeries, faced difficulties in eating, but still managed to live a regular life, even becoming a caring mother to her own pups.

In 2012, people worldwide supported Kabang. New York-based nurse Karen Kenngott started the "Care for Kabang" fundraiser, allowing the hero dog to undergo specialized treatment at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in the United States. The journey to recovery had obstacles, including the discovery of heartworms and a tumor, but Kabang's strength and determination ultimately prevailed.

A Lasting Legacy

On June 8, 2013, Kabang came back to Zamboanga City, where her hometown warmly embraced her. She lived a fairly healthy and happy life until she said goodbye on May 17, 2021, leaving behind a legacy of love and inspiration. Her final resting place, close to the statue of Francis of Assisi, serves as a touching reminder of her enduring spirit.

Eternalized in Metal: Kabang's Statue

Zamboanga City artist Kublai Milan made a lasting tribute to Kabang by creating a beautiful 400-kilogram aluminum statue, officially put up on August 13, 2021 in Barangay Pasonanca. Her story, which is in Ian Alfonso's "Dogs in Philippine History," is recognized alongside other notable dogs, proving her lasting impact.

A Memorial of Love and Care

Generous donations from people in the United States mainly funded Kabang's Hero Dog Memorial. It is now looked after by Dr. Anton Mari H. Lim in Zamboanga City. Inspired by the Statue of Balto in Central Park, Manhattan, this memorial honors a courageous dog and represents the limitless love and caring that bring communities together. Kabang's legacy continues, shining as a symbol of hope and strength among heroic animals.
