In 2021, former President Rodrigo Duterte bestowed a delectable honor upon Davao City and the entire region by declaring them the Chocolate Capital of the Philippines through Republic Act No. 11547. Acknowledging Davao as the leading cacao producer not only heightened local pride but also positioned the Philippines at the forefront of the global chocolate scene.

This designation marks a milestone that opens new doors for everyone involved in the region. Endorsed by the national government, the acknowledgment positions the locals perfectly to elevate their craft and achieve even greater success.

Malagos: A Taste of Davao's Pride

One of Davao's culinary gems is Malagos, a brand that has earned over 50 international awards, showcasing its dedication to sustainable and ethical farming practices. Crafted "from tree to bar," Malagos Chocolate stands out in the world of premium chocolates.

The Malagos Journey and Recognitions

In 1963, Roberto and Charita Puentespina laid the foundation for the Puentespina Group of Companies in agriculture. Fast forward to 2003, Charita's passion for cacao blossomed in Malagos, Davao City.

With a vision to establish a Philippine chocolate brand instead of merely exporting cacao beans, the family invested in enhancing cacao growing practices.

Charita's dedication led to the establishment of Malagos Agri-Ventures Corporation in 2012. A year later, they introduced Malagos Chocolate, a single-origin fine flavor chocolate.

Charita's efforts gained recognition, including the 2017 Outstanding ASEAN Woman Entrepreneur, the 2017 Leaders and Achievers of Davao Award, and the 2017-2018 Gawad Saka Award for Outstanding Agricultural Entrepreneur from the Department of Agriculture.

In 2015, Malagos Chocolate secured its first international award, marking a significant achievement for the Philippine cacao industry.

In 2020, Malagos 100% Premium Unsweetened Chocolate clinched an impressive victory by securing four (4) Golds and one (1) Bronze at the 2020 World Drinking Chocolate Competition, organized by the renowned International Chocolate Awards. The results, which were unveiled during the virtual Schokoladen Gourmet Festival in Hannover, Germany, reaffirm the exceptional quality and recognition that Malagos Chocolate continues to achieve on the global stage.

Indulge in Sustainable Delight

As the industry flourishes, Malagos Agri-Ventures Corporation remains devoted to quality, sustainability, and collaboration. The growing interest in cacao aligns with a global trend toward sustainable food options and support for local industries.

Malagos takes pride in fostering the renewed love for cacao, inviting visitors to savor the delightful flavors and cultural heritage that make Davao the Chocolate Capital of the Philippines.
