The Norwegian Spirit, a cruise ship operated by the Norwegian Cruise Line, landed at the Port of Currimao in Ilocos Norte on Christmas Day with around 2,104 passengers and 887 staff members.

The Port of Currimao was the ship's first stop in the Philippines after leaving Taipei. This is also the ship's first visit to Luzon's northern entrance.

Using leis weaved by hand from Ilocano Abel fabric, they greeted the guests as soon as they docked.

Ilocos tour

The visitors went to a few historical places in Badoc, Laoag, Paoay, and Vigan.

Prior to a straightforward plaque handover between the local governments of Currimao and Ilocos Norte, the Department of Tourism (DOT), and the Philippine Ports Authority, the passengers and crew were greeted by Currimao folk dancers who performed for them at the port.

In order to boost cruise calls in the area, Currimao Port and Salomague Port in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur will undergo ongoing upgrades as part of the National Tourism Development Plan of 2023 to 2028.

These ports are well situated close to the Ilocos Region's well-known beaches and historical landmarks.

Building the industry

The government wants to create an industry that benefits local communities, cruise lines and their staff, and tourists who want to experience the vast diversity of cultures by improving efficiency, focusing on sustainable practices, and simplifying operations.

The DOT claims that the arrival of cruise ships in different regions of the nation this year is a sign of a thriving cruise industry that may benefit everyone in the long run.
