In a remarkable display of innovation and commitment to sustainability, Ilokano engineering students at Northwestern University in Laoag City have unveiled their latest project: solar-powered electric vehicles. These vehicles, meticulously crafted by senior mechanical engineering students, signify a big step towards promoting renewable energy within their community.

Efficiency and Environmental Responsibility

Crafted from scrap materials, these solar-powered vehicles boast five rechargeable batteries, enabling them to travel up to an impressive 23.5 kilometers before requiring recharging. What’s more, with the solar panel deployed, they can extend their range to a maximum of 30 kilometers. This blend of practicality and eco-friendliness underscores the students' dedication to efficient and sustainable transportation solutions.

Empowering Future Innovators

The development process for these vehicles isn’t just about creating functional prototypes; it also focuses on  instilling a mindset of innovation and environmental responsibility to the next generation of engineers. Under the guidance of their advisor, Rolly Ramos, students embarked on a journey of creativity and problem-solving, from the conceptualization phase to the final assembly. Through their endeavors, they're not only addressing pollution and rising fuel costs but also paving the way for future generations to tackle pressing environmental challenges.

As Efren Marquez Jr., one of the project's pioneers, aptly puts it, "My advice to future mechanical engineering students is to think positive and create projects like this one, too, to promote renewable energy so that we can help save the Earth." This sentiment embodies the spirit of innovation and optimism that drives these young engineers forward.

A Bright Future for Sustainable Innovation

Beyond their current achievement, these students are already setting their sights on future endeavors. With projects like a campus plastic shredder to combat waste and an Eco Hydro Project aimed at enhancing street lighting efficiency, their commitment to sustainable innovation knows no bounds. As they continue to harness their skills and creativity, the university eagerly anticipates the realization of more green initiatives, ensuring a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
