Journalists from leading news organizations gathered at the Manila Hotel on Tuesday for the opening of Digital Media Asia (DMA), a two-day forum organized by the WAN-IFRA. The event focuses on key challenges in revenue generation, technology, and innovation in the global media industry.
First launched in Singapore in 2009, this marks the first time DMA is being held in the Philippines, signaling the country’s growing role in regional media discussions. The forum runs until April 29 and gathers media professionals, executives, and digital strategists from around the world.
Global Media Leaders Tackle Digital Transformation
Over the two-day conference, speakers from international news organizations are presenting case studies and insights on building sustainable digital revenue models. Discussions highlight evolving audience behavior, the rise of the creator economy, and how Gen Z is reshaping media consumption patterns.
Sandy Prieto-Romualdez, chairperson of the WAN-IFRA Asia-Pacific Board, underscored the importance of collaboration among global media players.
“Today, we’re not just here to learn. We are here to collaborate, to challenge ideas, and to move the industry forward,” she said, adding that DMA serves as a platform to inspire action and innovation across newsrooms worldwide.
Manila Leadership Backs Media Innovation
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno expressed strong support for the media industry, emphasizing the importance of trust in the age of digital transformation.
“The lesson we learned is the same lesson this conference teaches—technology is only as good as the trust behind it. The tool is not the goal. The goal is to serve people better,” Moreno said.
He noted that discussions on artificial intelligence, data, and revenue sustainability are crucial for the survival of media organizations. Moreno also welcomed DMA’s Philippine debut, calling it significant for both Manila and the country.
He added that the event reinforces the shared responsibility of media organizations to promote transparency, accuracy, and trustworthy information in an increasingly digital world.
