The recent declaration of Lawak Island as a critical habitat marks a pivotal moment in the Philippines' assertion of sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). Recognizing its ecological significance, the provincial government of Palawan, along with various agencies, has taken proactive steps to safeguard this vital territory.
Palawan Governor Dennis Socrates heralds the declaration as just the beginning of comprehensive environmental protection measures and sovereignty assertion efforts. Designating Lawak Island as a critical habitat underscores the commitment to preserve its natural heritage while reaffirming the Philippines' territorial rights.
The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) played a key role in this initiative, issuing Resolution No. 22-827 to formally recognize Lawak Island as a critical habitat. This move, subsequently endorsed by the Kalayaan LGU through Municipal Ordinance No. 95-2023, sets a solid foundation for collaborative conservation efforts.
Collaborative Efforts for Conservation
The ceremonial signing of the Lawak Island Critical Habitat (LICH) involved multiple stakeholders, including the Provincial Government of Palawan, PCSD, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-CENRO, and the municipality of Kalayaan, in partnership with USAID-SIBOL. This collective endeavor underscores the significance of cooperation in safeguarding ecological treasures.
Governor Socrates emphasizes the importance of additional interventions, with plans underway for the construction of a port on Lawak Island for tourists. Assuring minimal disruption to the island's avian inhabitants, the provincial government aims to balance development with conservation efforts, guided by principles of sustainable tourism.
Upholding Sovereignty Amid Challenges
While challenges persist in asserting territorial claims, Governor Socrates views the endeavor as historically significant and remains undeterred in safeguarding Philippine interests. Kalayaan Mayor Roberto del Mundo echoes this sentiment, expressing gratitude for the attention directed towards Lawak Island and its ecological importance.
