In a groundbreaking partnership, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) MIMAROPA has joined forces with the provincial government to tackle the pressing issue of illiteracy and numeracy among the indigenous people (IPs) of the province. This collaborative effort marks a significant step towards inclusive education and community empowerment.

Bridging the Gap with GIP

The Government Internship Program (GIP), known for providing invaluable work experience and skills enhancement to unemployed youth, has pivoted its focus to address the specific needs of indigenous communities through the Zero Illiteracy and Innumeracy Program (ZIIP). This specialized initiative, aptly named GIP for IPs, targets college and senior high school graduates from indigenous backgrounds.

Under the GIP for IPs, qualified IP graduates are enlisted as educators to return to their communities and impart foundational education in literacy and numeracy. By harnessing the expertise and cultural insight of these indigenous educators, the program ensures that learning is not only effective but also culturally relevant and accessible to all.

Transformative Impact

Alina Habid, a member of the Tadyawan Mangyan tribe and a beneficiary of the program, shared her inspiring journey. "Learning to read and write brings me joy. I used to feel embarrassed about going to school because of my age, but now I feel empowered to pursue my studies with confidence," she expressed.

A Vision for Zero Illiteracy and Innumeracy

The ZIIP, spearheaded by the Provincial Government, aims to eradicate illiteracy and innumeracy among all residents, with a special emphasis on marginalized sectors like the indigenous populations. The collaboration with GIP has not only bolstered these efforts but has also provided a replicable model for other regions to follow.

A Brighter Future Ahead

As the partnership between DOLE MIMAROPA and the provincial government continues to flourish, it heralds a promising future for indigenous communities across the province. By prioritizing education and empowerment, they are paving the way for a more inclusive and prosperous society, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
