QC Raises The Bar In Rabies Control, Targets Zero Human Deaths By 2030

The Quezon City government is intensifying its efforts to curb rabies as it aligns with the global target of eliminating human rabies deaths by 2030. This push comes as the city continues to strengthen its health programs and prevention strategies following recent cases recorded within its communities.

In 2025, the city reported two rabies-related deaths, prompting a stronger and more coordinated response from local authorities. In reaction, health teams carried out extensive vaccination drives, reaching over 211,000 residents and more than 210,000 dogs and cats across 142 barangays, aiming to build stronger protection at the community level.

“Rabies is preventable. Every vaccinated pet protects a family and a community,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

To further improve accessibility, the local government introduced the QC Vet e-pet registration system through the QC eServices app. This digital platform allows pet owners to register their animals, schedule vaccinations, and access veterinary services such as deworming, consultations, microchipping, and spay and neuter procedures, all through an online system designed for convenience.

Strengthening Systems and Community Action

Beyond vaccination efforts, Quezon City is also working to strengthen collaboration across sectors. The city convened the Rabies Summit 2026, bringing together government agencies, private groups, and civil society organizations to enhance coordination, improve response mechanisms, and promote responsible pet ownership practices.

“City Veterinarian Dr. Rey del Napoles emphasized the city’s continued push: “We will keep working with our partners to protect both our residents and their pets.”

Through this approach, local authorities aim to build a more responsive and preventive system that addresses rabies at multiple levels, from awareness to rapid response. The initiative highlights how coordinated efforts can play a key role in reducing risks and preventing future cases.

For residents, access to information and services remains readily available through the official Quezon City Government and Veterinary Department Facebook pages, where updates on vaccination schedules and pet-related services are regularly posted.

As rabies remains a life-threatening yet preventable disease, Quezon City’s strengthened campaign underscores its importance not just for pet owners but for every Filipino, since controlling rabies protects both animals and human communities from a fatal but avoidable health risk.
