Researchers from the University of the Philippines Manila have developed an innovative gout medication made from pansit-pansitan (Peperomia pellucida), also known as ulasimang bato. This herbal-based tablet offers a natural alternative to conventional gout treatments, showing promising results in reducing uric acid levels without the harmful side effects commonly associated with synthetic drugs.

Promising Results in Clinical Trials

The pansit-pansitan tablet underwent clinical trials that demonstrated significant effectiveness in lowering uric acid levels in gout patients. By Day 14 of treatment, participants showed a 40% reduction in uric acid levels. This reduction continued progressively, reaching 63% by Day 28 and 78% by Day 49. These results are impressive, as high uric acid levels are a major cause of gout flare-ups, leading to intense pain and swelling, particularly in the joints.

Notably, the study reported no adverse effects, setting this natural remedy apart from conventional gout medications that can pose risks to kidney and liver health. This makes the pansit-pansitan tablet a potential breakthrough in gout treatment, particularly for those looking for a safer, more natural option.

A Safer, Natural Alternative

Jade Rodriguez, a researcher from the UP Manila Institute of Herbal Medicine, explained that pansit-pansitan has powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperuricemia properties, which are crucial for effectively managing gout. Unlike synthetic medications, which can lead to unwanted side effects, this herbal remedy offers a safer way to treat gout. With an estimated 1.6 million Filipinos suffering from gout, this medication could provide much-needed relief without the risk of damaging organs like the liver or kidneys.

Plans to Make the Medication Accessible

Efforts are underway to make the pansit-pansitan tablet available to the public. UP Manila’s Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) is actively seeking partners to bring this groundbreaking herbal medication to market. By making this treatment widely accessible, UP Manila hopes to provide Filipinos with an affordable, effective, and natural solution for managing gout.
