In 2024, La Union reached a significant environmental achievement, collecting over 8,600 kilos of plastic waste through its Palit Basura (garbage exchange) program. This initiative, launched in April 2023 in partnership with Project Hope and Century Tuna’s Save Our Seas Project, allows residents to exchange polyethylene bottles and solid waste for canned goods.

A total of 8,639 kilos of waste was collected, resulting in 10,997 canned goods being distributed. The program not only helps reduce waste but also supports local families, creating a sustainable solution for both the environment and the community.

The 2023 Plastic Code: A Step Toward Sustainability

As part of its broader environmental efforts, La Union has implemented the 2023 Plastic Code, which bans single-use plastics and polystyrene products in all business establishments. This includes items like plastic forks, spoons, cups, straws, and Styrofoam containers. Governor Raphaelle Veronica David has urged residents to use eco-friendly alternatives, stating, "We continue to intensify our information education campaign and encourage our province mates to use alternatives to plastic." The code aims to drastically reduce plastic waste, especially in La Union’s popular tourist spots.

Keeping Tourist Destinations Clean

La Union is known for its scenic beaches and surf destinations, which attract visitors year-round. To keep these areas clean, the provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) has placed large trash bins in key locations like Urbiztondo in San Juan and Immuki Island in Balaoan. Governor David emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal, saying, "We encourage our visitors and locals to properly dispose of their trash to preserve the beauty of our tourist spots."

January, designated as Zero Waste Month, serves as a reminder to both locals and visitors to stay committed to preserving the environment. Through these collective efforts, La Union is setting a strong example in promoting sustainability while maintaining its natural beauty for future generations.
