Q.C. Bags International Climate Award For Trash-To-Cashback Initiative

Quezon City has earned global recognition for its innovative approach to waste management through the Trash to Cashback program, securing a spot among the top 2025 Local Leaders Climate Awardees at the Bloomberg Philanthropies COP30 Local Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Turning Waste Into Value

The program, launched in 2021 in partnership with Basic Environmental System Technologies Inc., incentivizes residents to exchange recyclables and single-use plastics for environmental points (EPs). These points can then be redeemed for basic commodities or applied to utility bills, creating both a financial and environmental benefit.

Mayor Joy Belmonte expressed gratitude for the international acknowledgment.

“We are grateful to Bloomberg Philanthropies and C40 Cities for recognizing Quezon City’s initiatives toward a circular economy,” Belmonte shared. “This award strengthens our resolve to implement inclusive and sustainable solutions that protect our residents from the impacts of environmental degradation and climate change.”

Since its inception, the initiative has diverted more than 719,000 kilograms of waste from landfills and waterways, generating 2.36 million EPs in total.

Collective Action for Sustainability

Belmonte highlighted that the achievement reflects a unified effort among government agencies, stakeholders, and the local community.

“This accomplishment reflects the strength of collective action between the government, stakeholders, and citizens. We will keep on working hand-in-hand to ensure a future that is safe, livable, and inclusive for all,” she noted.

The award adds to Quezon City’s growing track record in sustainability. In 2022, the city’s Urban Farming Program was also a finalist in the C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards under the “United to Innovate” category.

The Local Climate Leaders Awards aim to spotlight projects that deliver measurable environmental impact, provide scalable solutions, and inspire communities worldwide to adopt innovative climate practices.
