Nagcarlan, a quaint town in Laguna, harbors a remarkable secret beneath its serene landscape—the Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery. Constructed in 1845 by the Franciscan priest Vicente Velloc, it stands as the only underground burial site in the Philippines.

Originally designed as the final resting place for Spanish friars and affluent Catholic families in Nagcarlan, the underground cemetery is a testament to the town's rich history. Built with both architectural and historical significance, it has become a rare gem that deserves recognition and preservation.

A National Treasure

Before entering the underground cemetery, a tall 18-foot arch in a red-bricked Baroque style welcomes visitors. On its right side, the marker of the National Historical Institute is prominently displayed.

This distinctive burial site has transcended its original function, evolving into a symbol of Nagcarlan's heritage. Its role as a historical landmark was officially recognized in 1973 through Presidential Decree No. 260, with further amendments by Administrative Order 1505 on June 11, 1978, solidifying its status as a national treasure.

Following the declaration, the cemetery ceased to allow further burials. After undergoing renovations, it reopened to the public during the marker unveiling on October 24, 1981. The oldest tomb dates back to 1886, and the last interment occurred in 1982 when it was officially recognized as a National Historical Landmark.

The Historical Chapel

Walking across the yard leads to the chapel at the far end, where burial masses are conducted. Currently, the chapel is reserved for special occasions like the Feast of Christ the King, Lenten masses, and Senakulos.

As visitors explore the hidden chambers, they are transported back in time, unraveling the stories of the individuals laid to rest within its walls. The epitaphs and inscriptions on the tombs serve as silent narrators of a bygone era, preserving the legacy of those who once graced Nagcarlan with their presence.

In a world of constant change, the Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery stands as a steadfast reminder of the town's rich cultural tapestry. It beckons to be explored not only for its historical significance but also for the stories it holds within its subterranean walls.
