Dr. Merlinda Palencia, a professor at Adamson University, has developed an innovative and eco-friendly solution to treat wastewater at home. Her creation, Vigormin powder, is a 100% natural, biogenic powder that provides households with an easy way to clean wastewater, reducing pollution and contributing to a healthier environment.

Addressing Metro Manila’s Wastewater Challenges

Wastewater pollution is a significant issue in Metro Manila, with many urban communities struggling with polluted estuaries. Dr. Palencia noted that 85% of wastewater comes from household activities, and only 15% comes from industrial sources. Schools and neighborhoods near bodies of water are particularly affected by foul smells and pollution from untreated wastewater.

“Kung mapapansin nyo, lahat ng eskwelahan dito sa Metro Manila, may estero, at lahat kami namrumrublema sa amoy at dumi ng estero,” Dr. Palencia shared, highlighting the widespread issue of polluted water in the area.

How Vigormin Powder Works

Vigormin powder provides a simple and effective way to treat wastewater. When added to a septic tank or wastewater container, the powder helps break down pollutants and neutralizes the water’s pH. One of the unique features of Vigormin is that some of the powder remains undissolved, allowing suspended particles to settle pollutants and leave the water cleaner.

“We did that on purpose. The water is not fully cleared because there is suspended pollution that will settle on the undissolved Vigormin powder. This helps clean the water on the surface,” Dr. Palencia explained.

Within minutes of mixing, the powder starts to take effect, going through multiple stages to clarify the water, making it suitable for reuse, such as watering plants.

A Simple, Effective Solution for Households

Vigormin powder is easy to use—just one kilogram per month is enough to treat wastewater in a household septic tank. This affordable and eco-friendly solution offers a way for residents to reduce pollution and improve water quality, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable environment in urban areas.
