Sagay City, Negros Occidental, recognized for its dedication to environmental sustainability, is poised to introduce a substantial initiative - the 'No Plastic Day.’ This green movement is in line with City Ordinance No. 2023-015, also known as the Single-Use Plastic Regulation, signed by Mayor Narciso Javelosa. The ordinance aims to curtail the usage of single-use plastic carryout bags and polystyrene containers in business establishments throughout the city.

Implementation of 'No Plastic Day'

Commencing on January 1 and extending throughout the entire 2024, Sagay City will observe 'No Plastic Day' every Tuesday and Friday. By designating specific days for the restriction of plastic usage, the city aims to create awareness and instill a sense of responsibility among residents and businesses alike. The City Environment and Natural Resources Office will establish a technical working group to develop the implementing rules and regulations, ensuring effective enforcement.

Mayor Javelosa's Vision

Mayor Javelosa emphasizes that the ordinance's primary objective is to minimize the reliance on single-use plastics. Javelosa envisions a cleaner and greener Sagay City, where the harmful effects of plastic pollution are significantly reduced. The initiative further promotes the adoption of eco-friendly packaging alternatives like woven bags, cloth, paper bags, and other organic materials outlined in the ordinance.

Phased Approach Towards 2026

The 'No Plastic Day' initiative is not just a one-year endeavor. It is part of a phased approach leading up to a more ambitious goal. In 2025, Sagay City plans to expand the 'No Plastic Day' observance to three days a week, including Sundays. This escalation reflects the city's dedication to gradually decreasing reliance on single-use plastics.

Looking ahead to 2026, Sagay City aspires to become a plastic-free zone. The city aims to implement a comprehensive ban on plastic bags, styrofoam, and all single-use plastics in every establishment. This visionary step positions Sagay City as a leader in environmental conservation within the northern Negros region.

Community Engagement and Support

To ensure the success of the 'No Plastic Day' initiative, the Sagay City government encourages active participation and cooperation from residents, businesses, and other stakeholders. Community engagement programs, educational campaigns, and collaborations with local organizations will play a crucial role in creating a collective consciousness about the harmful effects of single-use plastics.
