Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) in Central Visayas has implemented ground power solutions to mitigate fuel costs and reduce carbon emissions during passenger arrivals and boarding.
The airport launched the Fixed Power Unit (FPU) and Pre-conditioned Air (PCA) services to support the worldwide environmental sustainability movement and also help reduce carbon emissions and promote fuel efficiency.
Impact of eco-friendly system
With the Fixed Power Unit in place, an environmentally beneficial ground power system, airplanes on the airfield can connect directly to a stationary electrically powered energy source.
Conversely, the PCA acts as an external device that provides fresh, preconditioned air to the aircraft and jet bridges in between flights. It will also be used for heating, cooling, and dehumidification.
“Being the second busiest airport in the country, we want to make sure to manage our carbon footprint and maintain good air quality for both passengers and workers in the airport," said Julius Neri Jr., Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority general manager.
"This is why we highly encourage airlines to use FPU and PCA units."
Global movement
The chief executive officer of Aboitiz InfraCapital GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation, Athanasios Titonis, stated that international airports such as Munich, Hong Kong, Zurich, and Dublin have implemented similar creative ways to reduce their environmental impact.
He noted that the MCIA is excited to be a part of the global sustainability movement alongside airports across the globe.
