After weeks of blackouts that disrupted daily life and led to the declaration of a state of calamity, Siquijor’s power supply has now been restored to full generating capacity, with enough electricity to meet the island’s peak demand.

Power Generation Fully Restored

The Siquijor Island Power Corporation (SipCor), the island’s sole power generation provider, confirmed that it has completed key repairs and deployed additional generator units to stabilize the supply. These efforts have brought back a 24-hour power supply across the entire province.

SipCor announced last Monday that it has fully restored its power plant’s guaranteed dependable capacity of 10,800 kilowatts (kW) in the province. This includes two generation set units that were deployed to provide additional capacity, along with the completion of maintenance on one of its service units.

“Over the past weeks, corrective maintenance was implemented to fully restore the shortfall of power supply... A generator set was repaired while two rental units were deployed to provide additional capacity,” SipCor said.

With these improvements, SipCor’s daily generating capacity is now more than sufficient to meet Siquijor’s electricity requirements. The company has also committed to conducting daily technical evaluations to ensure the continued reliability of supply moving forward.

Clarifying Roles: Generation vs. Distribution

While generation has been fully restored, the distribution of power to households and businesses falls under the Siquijor Electric Cooperative (Prosielco). This distinction is important to clarify, as any remaining localized or short brownouts are now related to distribution issues, not the availability of generated electricity.

SipCor has reiterated that it has fulfilled its responsibility of ensuring sufficient supply and is ready to work with other agencies and stakeholders to help improve overall service delivery on the island.

Public Inquiry Set for July 3

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has also set a public hearing on July 3 to investigate further the recent power outages experienced in the province. SipCor, along with other energy stakeholders, will provide updates on the actions taken and the steps moving forward to help prevent future disruptions.
