We must continue the fight against corruption in 2026.

The year 2025 exposed the stark realities facing the Philippines. From natural disasters to revelations of graft and mismanagement, it became clear just how deeply systemic corruption affects every sector of society. With the government’s slow response to these crises, this fight will inevitably extend into 2026. It is now urgent to define the outcomes we must demand in the coming year.

Accountability Must Be More Than Words

The nation’s frustration has reached a tipping point. The flood control scandal and numerous reports of misappropriated public funds highlight the failure of existing systems. For 2026, the most pressing expectation is for government authorities to move beyond rhetoric and deliver tangible results. Those responsible for corruption must be apprehended and prosecuted. Justice must be visible, consistent, and impartial, demonstrating that no one is above the law.

End the Culture of Deflection

Too often, politicians evade responsibility—blaming others, citing health issues, or postponing hearings. Corruption is not just a matter of individual wrongdoing; it is institutional. Public officials must be held accountable, cooperating fully with agencies such as the Commission on Audit (COA) and the Office of the Ombudsman. The political “blame game” must end, replaced by systemic reforms that prevent theft from taking root in the first place.

Transparent Oversight and Lifestyle Checks

Progress has been made as some senators and public officials now disclose their Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN). Yet this measure alone is insufficient. Effective accountability requires rigorous lifestyle checks for officials whose wealth appears disproportionate to their lawful income. By tracing the sources of wealth and enforcing transparency, the government can ensure that illicit gains are exposed and prevented from undermining public trust.

The Message for 2026

The events of 2025 have left a clear message: citizens deserve better from those who are entrusted to serve them. In 2026, the government must act decisively against corruption, prioritize transparency, and enforce accountability. The future of the Philippines depends on it—public trust and national progress cannot wait.
