Let's rework what SMP really means.

Let's rework what SMP really means.

In the Philippines, “SMP,” or “Samahan ng Malalamig ang Pasko,” has been a familiar label for singles during the holidays. At first glance, it sounds like a Pinoy “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club.” But if you think about it, is our Christmas really cold when we’re already surrounded with so much love?

Finding Warmth in Loved Ones

The punchline of SMP is singles celebrating Christmas without a significant other. But spending time with friends and family can bring more comfort than any romantic relationship. Granted, you would evade the throwaway comments your relatives may have about your relationship status. Answering those is more stressful, to be honest.

That’s why it’s important to surround yourself with people who genuinely care about you. Focusing on them reignites the warmth that comes from human connection. It’s the universe’s way of telling you the joy of the season is already around you.

Paying it Forward

As Filipinos, we’re familiar with “acts of service,” especially during the holidays. We carry so much love within ourselves that we can share it freely with others. Think of someone volunteering at a community project, helping at an orphanage, or simply washing the dishes after Noche Buena! A single Christmas can be full of love and meaning when we just exercise kindness.

Practicing Self-Love

You won’t really be in SMP when you invest in yourself. Because you don’t carry the demands of a partner, you can learn new skills, return to old hobbies, and even treat yourself to a gift or experience.

Besides that, solo dates during the holidays are opportunities for you to connect with yourself internally. Because what better time to reflect on your goals and discover what truly makes you happy? When you focus on yourself, you turn the season into one of personal growth.

Faith and Spiritual Warmth

At its core, Christmas is about the birth of Christ, whose love fills every heart, single or not. Whether through prayer, attending the Simbang Gabi, or reflecting on His teachings, connecting spiritually can bring you peace and purpose. Because at the end of the day, His love is unlimited; it’s always available to comfort, guide, and uplift.

Celebrate the Season Your Way

The “Samahan ng Malamig ang Pasko” isn’t as cold as we think. With kindness, self-care, meaningful connections, and a strong sense of faith, it can turn the iciest of holidays into a warm one.
