The future of POGOs in the Philippines remains uncertain as regulatory scrutiny intensifies in 2025. Authorities have finally begun to recognize the growing problem POGOs impose upon the country, and have implemented various countermeasures in hopes of hindering the impetus of which these hubs are currently heading.

Long story short: POGOs are detrimental to the Philippines, and we're going to root them out.

Pest Control

Recent reports highlight growing concerns about the potential links between these operations and organized crime, including the involvement of foreign nationals, illegal gambling activities, and financial scams.

Following a series of raids on POGO hubs, authorities uncovered troubling evidence. In one case, nearly 28,000 SIM cards seized from a POGO facility in August 2023 were suspected to be used in various scams. Furthermore, in a more recent raid, 29 foreign nationals, primarily from China and Myanmar, were arrested in Cavite for operating illegal POGO facilities, leading to deportation proceedings and further investigations into harboring charges against the local operators.

Our officials seem to have uncovered the bulk of the infestation, only to be stunted by how deep and wide the actual operation goes.

Tip of the Iceberg

As the Philippine government continuously pushes for increased inspections and investigations into the financial channels linked to POGOs, including possible involvement from local banks, the problem appears to be escalating. The Philippine Bureau of Immigration (BI) is also ramping up efforts to crack down on the illegal employment of foreign nationals in these hubs.

Despite the government's efforts to contain the issue, the persistent use of technology in illegal gambling operations and scams signals that POGOs will continue to pose challenges in 2025. A year might not be enough time for us to purge our country of these hubs, but it will come, as long as we don't falter in our efforts.

Persistence is Key

In conclusion, while steps are being taken to tackle the issue, POGOs remain a significant concern for law enforcement and policymakers in the Philippines as we move deeper into 2025.

The crackdown is necessary to address the growing concerns of criminal activity associated with these gaming hubs. The government's response, however, will require comprehensive legal reforms and enforcement strategies to effectively eliminate these operations and prevent them from resurfacing under different guises.
