SM Prime Holdings, Inc.--one of Southeast Asia’s leading integrated property developers–has recently earned top honors at the 2024 Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards and the Sustainable Energy Awards, both organized by the Department of Energy (DOE). These awards highlight the company’s continuous commitment to energy efficiency, sustainability, and environmental stewardship, with notable achievements across its malls and commercial properties.
Recognizing Excellence in Energy Efficiency
At the 2024 Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards, SM Prime was recognized for its outstanding efforts in energy conservation. The company earned awards in multiple categories, with SM Center Pulilan winning in the Large Building category and SM City Tanza and SM City Tuguegarao honored in the New and Existing Building category. The awards acknowledge the company’s dedication to reducing energy consumption through advanced energy management systems.
SM Prime’s recognition was based on its comprehensive energy management strategies, including the implementation of energy-efficient technologies such as LED lighting, smart building management systems, and improved insulation. These initiatives are part of a broader commitment to minimizing the environmental impact of its properties while maintaining operational efficiency. SM Prime’s ongoing investments in energy conservation directly support the company’s long-term sustainability goals and help reduce its overall carbon footprint.
SM Mall of Asia: A Leader in Renewable Energy
SM Prime’s flagship property, SM Mall of Asia (MOA), also garnered significant recognition, receiving the first-ever Sustainable Energy Award for a Private Institution by the DOE. This award highlights SM MOA’s groundbreaking use of renewable energy, particularly through its large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) system.
The solar installation, which spans the mall’s car park rooftops, consists of 10,426 solar panels and 40 inverters, capable of generating 2.7 megawatts (MW) of peak energy. This renewable energy source powers approximately 1,790 households annually, significantly reducing the mall's reliance on conventional energy. With 35 SM Supermalls now equipped with solar PV systems, generating a combined total of 44 MW of peak energy, SM Prime continues to lead the charge toward a greener, more sustainable future.
SM Prime’s Broader Sustainability Commitment
Beyond its energy-efficient buildings and renewable energy initiatives, SM Prime is deeply committed to playing a central role in the Philippines’ national sustainability efforts. The company is a major participant in the DOE’s Interruptible Load Program (ILP), which helps stabilize the national grid by reducing electricity consumption during peak periods. With 110 MW of power committed to the ILP, SM Prime is the largest private-sector contributor, with SM Mall of Asia alone contributing 15.92 MW during each ILP activity.
These efforts align with SM Prime’s goal of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2040 and demonstrate the company’s ongoing dedication to helping the Philippines transition to a more sustainable energy future. SM Prime’s focus on renewable energy, waste management, and energy conservation is not only about reducing operational costs but also about contributing to a cleaner, greener environment for future generations.
