President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has declared a state of national calamity following the widespread devastation caused by Typhoon Tino, which battered several regions in the Visayas and parts of Mindanao.
Marcos approved the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) after a situation briefing with government agencies. He said the declaration would allow faster access to emergency funds and ensure a coordinated national response.
“Because of the scope of problem areas that have been hit by Tino and will be hit by Uwan… there was a proposal from the NDRRMC which I approved that we declare a national calamity,” Marcos said.
He noted that 10 to 12 regions were affected by the typhoon.
P760 Million in Aid for Affected LGUs
The Office of the President has released P760 million in cash assistance to local government units (LGUs) hit hardest by the storm.
According to Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro, the fund aims to support relief, recovery, and rehabilitation efforts in affected communities.
“We are continuing our relief support for those who were hit by Typhoon Tino,” Marcos said, adding that operations are ongoing with help from the DSWD, AFP, and local governments.
High Death Toll, Rescue Efforts Ongoing
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported 114 deaths, with Cebu Province recording 71 fatalities. Other casualties were reported in Negros Occidental (18), Negros Oriental (12), and Agusan del Sur (6).
At least 127 people remain missing, while 79 have been injured. Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported a higher toll of 140 deaths, citing additional data from Cebu authorities.
In Liloan, Cebu, residents continue to dig through mud and debris as floodwaters recede.
“Unfortunately, the casualty count is very high. Marami tayong deaths na nasuffer,” Marcos said, noting that figures are still being verified.
Preparing for Typhoon Uwan
Even as recovery continues, the government is bracing for Tropical Storm Uwan (Fung-Wong), expected to enter the country’s area of responsibility this weekend. Marcos said preparations are underway to mobilize response teams and ensure communities are ready for another potential landfall.
