The Philippines is celebrating a major achievement in currency innovation as its First Philippine Polymer Banknote Series (FPPBS) was named “Best New Banknote or Banknote Series” by the International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA). Introduced by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) in December 2024, the polymer notes have gained international praise for their advanced features and standout design.

World-Class Design and Security

The IACA commended the FPPBS for its innovative security elements, including a dynamic value panel that changes depending on light angle, transparent windows, and embedded shadow threads. These features not only enhance protection against counterfeiting but also give the banknotes a unique, high-tech feel. The design was also lauded for being “captivating and culturally significant,” proudly reflecting Filipino identity.

A Win for Sustainability and Modernization

The polymer series includes the P500, P100, and P50 denominations, following the earlier release of the P1,000 polymer note in 2022. This shift to polymer material supports BSP’s goals of durability, cleanliness, and sustainability in currency. “This recognition affirms our commitment to innovation in currency design, ensuring that our banknotes meet the global standards of security and sustainability,” said BSP Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan.

Public Support and Global Recognition

This isn’t the first time Philippine polymer bills have earned global acclaim. The P1,000 note was previously awarded “Banknote of the Year” in 2022 by the International Banknote Society (IBS). BSP surveys also show strong public support for polymerization, with Filipinos embracing the change as smarter, cleaner, and longer-lasting.
