According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) intends to terminate operations at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 4 following the completion of NAIA Terminal 2's expansion.

By September 14, when the expansion of Terminal 2 begins, NNIC–which is made up of the conglomerates San Miguel Holdings Corp., RMM Asian Logistics Inc., RLW Aviation Development Inc., and Incheon International Airport Corp.–is scheduled to assume control of NAIA's operations.

They also plan to rehabilitate Terminal 1 and expand Terminal 3, while Terminal 4 will be converted into a warehouse and location for administrative offices.

Plans and visions

As part of the three terminals' expansion, the passenger boarding bridges will be repaired and replaced, the baggage handling system will be upgraded or replaced, and inter-terminal passenger and luggage transportation will be improved.

In addition, new airside and surface access roads will be built, and the automated terminal information system and other crucial communication systems will be enhanced, along with the passenger pick-up and drop-off operations.

“The north wing of Terminal 2 will be expanded towards the Philippine Village Hotel and Nayong Pilipino area. The south wing will be extended towards Terminal 1 after the International Cargo Complex and fuel farm are relocated,” said DOTr Sec. Jaime Bautista delivered by assistant secretary Hector Villacorta.

Additionally, since the terminal will be directly in front of the final station for the subway's airport service, passengers utilizing Terminal 3 will have easy access to the Metro Manila Subway.

Increasing capacity

The DOTr reports that the development will eventually raise Terminal 2's passenger capacity from 9 million to 32 million annually.

There will be an additional remote apron set aside for general aviation and an increase in aircraft parking from 61 to 104 bays.

NNIC plans to construct a three-story Airport Express Hotel next to Terminal 2's north wing to serve travelers with early morning departures and those who missed their connecting flights.

When Terminal 2's extension is finished, an access road toward the north wing of the facility is also planned.
