The Philippines has joined more than 65 countries in issuing a joint statement calling for stronger protection for United Nations peacekeepers deployed under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The statement was delivered during a media stakeout at the United Nations Headquarters, where signatories expressed serious concern over the safety of peacekeeping personnel amid escalating violence in Lebanon.
The group strongly condemned recent attacks targeting UNIFIL, including a deadly incident that killed three Indonesian peacekeepers and injured several others from France, Ghana, Indonesia, Nepal, and Poland. They stressed that peacekeepers must never be targeted, noting that such actions violate international law and may constitute war crimes.
Calls for Investigation and Accountability
The signatories urged swift, transparent, and comprehensive investigations into all attacks against peacekeepers. They emphasized that those responsible must be held accountable to prevent further violence and to uphold the integrity of UN peacekeeping missions.
They also condemned what they described as increasingly aggressive behavior toward UNIFIL personnel and leadership. The statement noted that tensions in Lebanon have escalated since March 2, further endangering both peacekeepers and civilians in the area.
Humanitarian Concerns and Push for De-escalation
Beyond security risks, the countries raised alarm over the worsening humanitarian situation in Lebanon, citing widespread destruction, significant civilian casualties, and the displacement of more than one million people.
The coalition called on all parties to return to the 2024 cessation of hostilities arrangement and to fully respect United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which aims to maintain peace and stability in southern Lebanon. They also urged immediate de-escalation and renewed diplomatic engagement, reaffirming support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and unity.
