The Philippines is stepping up efforts to protect its coastal ecosystems and enhance climate resilience with the launch of the National Blue Carbon Action Partnership (NBCAP). Led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and in collaboration with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) Philippines, the initiative aims to restore and protect crucial coastal ecosystems that contribute to climate change mitigation. The project is supported by the World Economic Forum’s Ocean Action Agenda and the UK Government’s Blue Planet Fund.

Protecting Blue Carbon Ecosystems

Blue carbon ecosystems like mangroves, seagrasses, and tidal marshes are vital for both environmental protection and local livelihoods. These ecosystems act as natural barriers against storm surges, can store carbon, and are capable of supporting marine biodiversity. Through NBCAP, the Philippine government is strengthening efforts to restore and safeguard these critical areas. The goal is to ensure their sustainability for climate resilience and biodiversity conservation while also supporting community development.

Data-Driven Restoration Efforts

A key focus of the NBCAP is using scientific data to guide restoration efforts. At the launch event, ZSL Philippines Country Director Edwina Garchitorena stressed the importance of evidence-based strategies for protecting both people and the environment. Experts from institutions like UP Diliman and UP Los Baños highlighted that better access to scientific research is essential for informing policies and conservation initiatives. NBCAP aims to make this research more accessible to policymakers and conservationists, fostering collaboration across sectors.

Aligning with Global Climate Goals

The NBCAP also aligns with the Philippines' commitments to international climate and biodiversity agreements, particularly those outlined in the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP). As part of the initiative, the government plans to finalize a National Blue Carbon Action Roadmap, integrating scientific research into policies that support sustainable management of blue carbon ecosystems.
