The Philippines has emerged as a key player in the medical tourism sector, attracting patients not just for cost-effective healthcare services but also for a unique wellness and travel experience. With a rich cultural heritage and stunning destinations, the country is positioning itself as a premier destination for those seeking medical care abroad.

A Growing Medical Tourism Destination

The Philippines ranks third in Southeast Asia for medical tourism, according to Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco. This status highlights the country's ability to blend healthcare with unforgettable travel experiences. On a global scale, the Philippines is positioned above 20th place as a medical tourism destination, showcasing its potential to attract more international patients. The Department of Tourism (DOT) is actively working to enhance this reputation, focusing on providing a comprehensive health and wellness tourism experience.

Wellness Beyond Treatment

In addition to medical services, the Philippines offers patients opportunities to engage in experiential travel and wellness packages. These packages often include traditional Filipino healing practices such as "hilot," a therapeutic massage technique. This holistic approach not only aids in physical recovery but also immerses patients in the rich culture of the Philippines.

The DOT has also rolled out a Filipino Brand of Wellness module aimed at tourism stakeholders, further elevating the country's health and wellness offerings to meet global standards.

Commitment to Quality and Safety

As the medical tourism industry grows, patient safety and quality of care remain paramount. The Medical Tourism Association reports that the sector is valued at USD 100 billion and is experiencing significant annual growth. Patients considering overseas treatment place a high value on healthcare provider accreditation and payment security.

In response, the Philippine government is collaborating with the private sector to establish its own accreditation system for medical tourism facilities. Notable institutions like The Medical City and Makati Medical Center are already recognized, ensuring patients receive high-quality care.
