Balut–the infamous fertilized duck egg–has found itself in the spotlight once more, but this time as the “worst-rated Filipino food” according to TasteAtlas. Scoring a mere 2.7 out of 5, this polarizing dish tops the list for 2024, based on feedback from 3,813 users worldwide. Following closely behind is inipit, a traditional Filipino dessert, with a score of 2.9. It seems that while many adore balut, others simply can't stomach the thought of it.

A Delicacy with a Divide

Described by TasteAtlas as a “popular but unusual Filipino delicacy,” balut is typically enjoyed straight from its shell, often paired with vinegar, salt, chili, or garlic. Found everywhere from bustling street stalls to upscale restaurants, this dish has made a name for itself. Often regarded as an aphrodisiac, it’s frequently consumed alongside a cold beer.

The dish even gained renewed attention last year when rapper Doja Cat released a song titled “Balut,” although her depiction—calling it “a bird that’s being eaten alive”—led to significant backlash from Filipino netizens. Regardless of the mixed reviews, balut remains a fascinating culinary experience, captivating adventurous eaters around the globe.

Celebrating Filipino Cuisine

While balut may not have fared well in TasteAtlas's latest ranking, other Filipino dishes are basking in the spotlight.

Sinigang, a beloved tamarind-infused soup, emerged as a top favorite, scoring an impressive 4.5 out of 5. This dish encapsulates the vibrant flavors of Filipino cuisine, along with favorites like chicken inasal (grilled marinated chicken) and lechon (roasted whole pig). TasteAtlas continues to shed light on the diverse culinary traditions across cultures, reminding us that every dish tells a story.

In the end, balut’s controversial status only adds to its mystique, igniting discussions about food, culture, and personal taste. Whether you're a fan or a critic, there's no denying that this unique delicacy is an integral part of the Filipino culinary scene.
