Before Alex Eala, there was Felicisimo Ampon and Raymundo Deyro.

Before Alex Eala, there was Felicisimo Ampon and Raymundo Deyro.

Long before we celebrated Alex Eala’s milestones, there was a time when two Filipinos carried the country’s hopes on tennis courts around the world. Armed with wooden rackets and fueled by determination, Felicisimo Ampon and Raymundo Deyro faced some of the sport’s biggest names and proved that the Philippines belonged among tennis’ elite.

The Rivalry That Defined an Era

Ampon and Deyro weren’t just teammates; they were rivals who constantly pushed each other to improve.

Despite being only around five feet tall, Ampon, known as the “Mighty Mite,” amazed international audiences by defeating much taller opponents with his speed and precision. Meanwhile, Deyro built a reputation through consistency and resilience, becoming one of the country’s long-standing Davis Cup players.

Their rivalry peaked during the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo. At the all-Filipino men’s singles final, Deyro clinched the gold medal while Ampon was awarded silver. But instead of letting the competition divide them, they reunited at the doubles event and secured another gold for the Philippines.

More Than Just a Tidbit

Ampon's and Deyro’s achievements remind us that the impact of Philippine tennis isn’t new. Yes, Alex Eala has become the face of the sport now, but she’s continuing a story that started decades ago. Moreover, the two men’s stories raise an important question: what more could Filipino athletes accomplish if sports that aren’t basketball and boxing received the same level of recognition and support?

For years, tennis has remained one of the country’s less accessible sports. Many aspiring players depend on family sacrifices, private sponsors, and limited training opportunities just to compete internationally. As a result, their skills can go unnoticed, and stories like Ampon’s and Deyro’s slowly fade from public memory.

Moving Forward

Today, Eala’s success is giving Philippine tennis another moment in the spotlight. It’s also time we look back at the pioneers who came before her. Because more than just celebrating their achievements, remembering them means that investing in all sports can create more opportunities for future generations.

After all, the next Filipino champion may already be out there, simply waiting to be seen.
