Rachel Alejandro, daughter of Filipino pop icon Hajji Alejandro, won Best Supporting Actress at the 2nd Manila International Film Festival (MIFF) in Los Angeles on March 7, 2025. The award, presented for her role in Song of the Fireflies, was a heartfelt and unexpected achievement. In a post on her Facebook wall, Rachel shared her surprise, stating, “I didn’t have a speech prepared… I only thought of my Dad. This win is for him.”

A Story of Resilience and Music

Song of the Fireflies tells the inspiring story of the Loboc Children’s Choir (LCC) from Bohol, Philippines, highlighting their resilience, community, and the transformative power of music. Alejandro, who co-produced and starred in the film, was deeply moved by the choir’s talent when she first saw them in 2018. “Their story needed to be told,” she explained.

In her role as Equet Butalid, the wife of a Bohol governor, Alejandro skillfully portrayed a character whose conflicts with the lead, Alma Taldo (played by Morissette Amon), were essential to the story’s development. “My character isn’t a villain,” Alejandro said. “She helps Alma grow, even if their approaches differ.”

The film’s heartwarming narrative, combined with its powerful musical performances, has resonated with audiences, who have been moved to tears—not from sadness, but from the sheer joy the music evokes. “Music is in our DNA,” Alejandro added, reflecting on how the film’s musical elements have created an emotional connection with viewers.

Looking Ahead: Concerts and Playdates

With Song of the Fireflies’ success, Alejandro is focused on future projects. She dreams of organizing a concert featuring the Loboc Children’s Choir and Morissette, as well as bringing the film to the Philippines. “Anything is possible if you believe,” she said, looking ahead with excitement. From her surprise win in Hollywood to her passion for bringing Filipino stories to the world, Rachel Alejandro’s journey continues to inspire.
