In Iligan, a pioneering startup is addressing the growing problem of plastic waste by transforming single-use plastics into sustainable roofing tiles. Featured on Game Changer in "24 Oras," this initiative highlights a practical approach to environmental challenges while providing much-needed materials for modular housing. By embracing the concept of a circular economy, the startup aims to reduce waste and extend the life cycle of resources.

Embracing Green Technology

The journey began in 2019, driven by innovator Kenno Uy’s observation of the excessive plastic waste in his community. “We saw the tons of plastic piling up and realized we needed a solution,” Uy shared. “While we waited for broader solutions, we explored technologies to repurpose this waste.” The result is a set of eco-friendly roofing tiles that not only serve a functional purpose but also contribute to sustainability.

The manufacturing process is designed to minimize environmental impact. Instead of melting the plastics, which can produce harmful emissions, the team crushes them into pellets. These pellets are then combined with an eco-friendly adhesive and molded for about six hours. A cement coating is applied to enhance durability and insulation, ensuring the tiles are as lightweight and effective as traditional roofing materials.

Supporting Sustainability and Job Creation

The startup's innovative approach has caught the attention of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), which has provided funding to help combat plastic pollution in the Philippines. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasized the broader implications of such projects: “These initiatives not only reduce plastic waste but also create job opportunities and support environmental protection.”

Looking to the future, Uy’s team aims to integrate their eco roofing tiles into the construction of modular houses by next year. This initiative not only demonstrates the potential for recycling but also underscores the power of innovation in tackling pressing global issues. As they move forward, the startup stands as a testament to how creativity and sustainability can go hand in hand in building a cleaner, greener world.
