The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) marked its 124th anniversary with a simultaneous mangrove planting drive across Surigao del Norte on Friday, reaffirming its commitment to both service and sustainability.

In Surigao City, personnel from Coast Guard Station Surigao del Norte (CGS-SDN) and its sub-stations planted about 500 mangrove propagules in Barangay Lipata. The initiative extended to Siargao Island, where an additional 450 propagules were planted in the coastal areas of Dapa and Sta. Monica.

Anniversary with a Purpose

The mangrove planting formed part of the PCG’s theme this year, “Honoring Service, Commitment and Maritime Excellence.” According to CGS-SDN, the activity symbolizes the agency’s proactive engagement with local communities, going beyond maritime safety to embrace environmental stewardship. By restoring coastal ecosystems, the PCG strengthens its role as a protector not only of seas but also of the communities that depend on them.

Surigao del Sur Joins the Cause

The conservation drive also reached Surigao del Sur, where Coast Guard Station Surigao del Sur (CGS-SDS) planted 200 propagules in Barangay Bucto, Bislig City. The unit emphasized that the initiative aims to restore and preserve coastal habitats, safeguard natural resources, and ensure that future generations inherit a healthier environment. Through this collective effort, the PCG highlights how protecting nature is inseparable from protecting lives.
