The first phase of Mindanao's largest ground-mounted solar power plant has officially started operations in Tantangan, South Cotabato, marking a major milestone in the region's shift toward renewable energy. The Tantangan Solar Power Project, developed by Apolaki Seven Inc. in partnership with German renewable energy firm ib vogt GmbH, began construction in August 2025 and became operational several months ahead of its original December 2026 target.
According to the Department of Energy (DOE), the facility is currently generating 74.5 megawatts peak (MWp) of electricity. It is expected to reach its full 99-MWp capacity by October, with construction already more than 97 percent complete.
Powering Homes While Reducing Carbon Emissions
Once fully completed, the solar facility will include a four-megawatt battery energy storage system designed to improve grid stability, particularly during periods of high electricity demand.
The DOE estimates that the project will produce around 163 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity annually—enough to power approximately 68,000 households across Mindanao. The renewable energy facility is also expected to reduce carbon emissions by nearly 114,000 metric tons every year, supporting the country's efforts to expand the use of sustainable energy sources.
Boosting Development and Energy Security
Tantangan Mayor Timee Joy Gonzales described the project as a symbol of progress for the municipality, saying it will help provide reliable and sustainable electricity while creating opportunities for local businesses and economic growth.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin likewise emphasized the importance of the project in strengthening Mindanao's energy supply and advancing the country's renewable energy goals. She said the commissioning of the solar plant reflects the government's commitment to developing reliable, resilient, and people-centered energy infrastructure while increasing the Philippines' energy self-sufficiency.
