For four popular tourism locations in Mindanao—Davao City, Davao del Norte, Siargao Island, and the Dinagat Islands—the United States has lowered the severity of its travel advisory.

On May 16, the US revised its travel recommendation for the Philippines, reducing the alert level to the four locations from 3 to 2.

Americans are advised to "reconsider travel" in areas that are under alert level 3. Conversely, alert level 2 advises US citizens to "exercise caution" when traveling to the destination.

Reflection on Mindanao’s improving state

As a positive step that will draw more international visitors to the stigmatized area, the Department of Tourism (DOT) welcomed the United States' decision to reduce its travel alert in four important Mindanao sites.

“We feel that this will also encourage our tourists from all over the world to come and visit and to see that Mindanao is safe and Mindanao is a wonderful place for any type of traveler,” Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said.

The head of tourism added that a memorandum of agreement was signed by the Department of Transportation, the Department of National Defense, the Department of the Interior, and local government to "ensure the development of tourism" in Mindanao.

“Mindanao, especially Northern Mindanao, is very safe and truly ready for tourists. Most importantly, the people here are very kind.” Frasco said.

Highlighting their beauty

A significant urban center in the southern Philippines, Davao City is well-known for its booming economy, which is supported by a variety of sectors like information technology and agriculture. It also has several noteworthy landmarks, like Mount Apo, the highest peak in the nation.

The neighboring Dinagat Islands and Siargao Island are well known for their breathtaking natural beauty and emphasis on eco-friendly travel. Siargao, the Philippines' surfing mecca, is known for its Cloud 9 break, attracting surfers worldwide.

Davao del Norte is well-known for its vast agricultural fields and rich cultural legacy. The province is a major player in the banana business in the Philippines, and its lush terrain sustains enormous plantations.
