What do you get when you turn an invasive river plant into glamorous gowns, handcrafted home décor, and a citywide celebration? In Las Piñas, you get one of the country's most unique festivals.
Now celebrating its 19th edition, the Las Piñas Waterlily Festival has grown from a simple environmental initiative into one of the city's most anticipated annual events. Led by the Villar Foundation, the festival showcases how creativity and sustainability can transform an everyday problem into a source of pride and livelihood.
From River Problem to Community Pride
Years ago, water lilies clogged the Prinza River, blocking waterways and contributing to flooding. Through the Sagip Ilog Program, the plants were regularly cleared to help rehabilitate the river.
Instead of treating the harvested water lilies as waste, the Villar Foundation launched the Water Lily Weaving Project, teaching residents to create baskets, sleeping mats, laundry hampers, bags, and home décor. The initiative provided new livelihood opportunities and inspired the first Waterlily Festival in 2005.
A Celebration of Creativity
Every barangay in Las Piñas now takes part in the annual festivities, making the festival a showcase of local talent and teamwork.
One of the biggest attractions is the Miss Las Piñas Waterlily 2026 pageant, where contestants grace the stage in elegant gowns woven from water lilies. The celebration also features the Sayaw Kabataan environmental dance competition, with performances promoting conservation and community resilience through colorful costumes made from recycled and locally sourced materials.
More Than Just a Festival
This year's celebration crowned Elise Gawaran Jeres of Barangay Talon Uno as Miss Waterlily 2026. Daphne Leigh Chrisman of Barangay Pilar was named first runner-up, while Zaira Antonella Contis of Barangay Almanza Uno placed second runner-up.
In the dance competition, the Sigla Dance Company of Barangay Talon Tres emerged as champion, followed by the Synergy Dance Troupe of Barangay Talon Uno and the Bahaghari Dance Troupe of Barangay BF International CAA.
More than a colorful spectacle, the 19th Las Piñas Waterlily Festival is a celebration of innovation, environmental stewardship, and community spirit, proving that even the humblest river weed can bloom into something extraordinary.
