The Pangasinan Salt Center in Barangay Zaragosa, Bolinao town is scheduled to provide 4,180 bags of 50-kilogram agricultural grade salt fertilizer to the Ilocos, Cagayan, and Central Luzon regions this year.
Pangasinan will be able to supply the said provinces through the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA).
According to the Pangasinan Provincial Information Office, the goal of the PCA's Coconut Fertilization Project is to increase coconut yield by rehabilitating low-bearing palms and using agricultural grade salt fertilizer.
Bolinao’s salt production
Bolinao Salt Farm can provide the necessary amount of locally manufactured Agricultural Grade Salt Fertilizer for the PCA's Coconut Fertilization Program as it has a ready supply of about 3,000 metric tons of salt.
A memorandum of agreement with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in December 2022 put the provincial government in an interim management strategy for the growth and upgrading of the salt farm in order to boost production.
The province's path toward sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and economic regeneration included important turning points that were signified by the salt project.
Boosting salt sector
In a previous statement, Pangasinan Governor Ramon Guico stated that the creation of the Pangasinan Salt Center was in line with the "Philippine Salt Industry Development Act," which seeks to fortify and resurrect the country's salt sector.
“We need to drastically reduce our dependency on imported salt and produce 100% of our consumption needs. We must even think of becoming a net exporter of salt in the future,” the Guico said.
About 93 percent of the salt needed by the Philippines is imported from China and Australia.
