The remains of a legendary United States Navy submarine renowned during World War II has been uncovered, off the coast of Luzon.

USS Harder, also known as "Hit 'em HARDER," was discovered by Tim Taylor's Lost 52 Projects with the intention of determining the whereabouts of abandoned wartime submarines.

It was discovered that the USS Harder was mostly undamaged and sitting erect, according to the Navy's History and Heritage Command.

Great reputation

Under the supervision of Commander Samuel Dealy, the USS Harder gained notoriety for sinking three destroyers and severely damaging two more in a span of four days.

The Japanese fleet was forced by these strikes to depart Tawi-Tawi one day ahead of schedule, according to the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC).

On August 24, 1944, during the American effort to reclaim the Philippines from Japanese forces occupying there, a combat resulted in the sinking of the USS Harder.

In its final combat, the Harder and two other subs went against Japanese escort warships in Dasol Bay, Pangasinan. The USS Harder had 79 crew members on board.

How it was found

Tim Taylor, the CEO of Tiburon Subsea and the Lost 52 Project, an organization devoted to finding and honoring the 52 submarines lost during World War II, gathered and delivered the data that was used to locate the wreckage.

During World War II, the Philippines played a significant role in the fighting between the United States and Japan. As a result, it is thought that there are other military shipwrecks in the waters surrounding the archipelago.

It is estimated that 11 US Navy submarines sank in Philippine waters for a variety of reasons in what was considered the deadliest war in history.
