A grade 11 student at a Marikina high school collapsed after an intramural basketball game and allegedly not receiving the appropriate medical attention, which led to his death.
Our Lady of Perpetual Succor College (OLOPSC) revealed the passing of their student, Shann Mikhail Estaquio, in a message that was shared on their Facebook page.
“Shann Mikhail Estaquio was playing basketball during our yearly Senior High School Mini-Olympics when he suddenly collapsed. Despite the urgent response from our experienced emergency medical responders prior to the arrival of the ambulance, unfortunately, Shan expired at the hospital at around 11:06 a.m.,” OLOPSC wrote in a statement.
"Unforeseen and isolated" case
The school announced that it will provide Shann's family with all possible support, including emotional and financial assistance.
Shann's death was described by OLOPSC as an "unforeseen and isolated" case.
When Estaquio was spotted having a seizure, school medical staff performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the youngster, according to a video of the incident that went viral on social media.
However, medical experts have said that people who are having seizures shouldn't receive CPR because their breathing should return to normal after the seizure has ended.
Backlash
In response to Shann's death, the Student Council Alliance of the Philippines (SCAP) chastised OLOPSC, claiming that it was not only incompetent but also negligent.
The school was also criticized for "downplaying" the incident as unusual and unexpected.
“Their failure to recognize their lapses in medical response, lack of proper emergency protocols, and absence of immediate medical personnel only proves their gross disregard for student welfare," it said. "This was not an accident—it was a systemic failure that could have been prevented had the institution taken proactive steps to ensure student safety," it said.
