From January 22-28, the picturesque beach of La Union, known as the Surfing Capital of the North, played host to the 2024 World Surf League-La Union International Pro for the second consecutive year.
The event, a thrilling celebration of surfing prowess and cultural diversity, was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the United Philippines Surfing Association, the Department of Tourism (DOT), the provincial government of La Union, the local government of San Juan, and the La Union Surf Club.
Director Joseph Francisco Ortega of DOT Region 1 expressed the unique appeal of La Union, highlighting its perfect waves for both beginners and seasoned surfers. With numerous DOT-accredited surfing schools and a community of surfers trained in water safety and basic life support, La Union sets the stage for a world-class surfing experience.
A Global Affair: Diverse Participation in the Pro Tour
Out of the 105 talented surfers who competed in the Pro Tour, 41 hailed from different parts of the Philippines, alongside participants from Australia, Japan, Indonesia, South Korea, Russia, France, Italy, and the United States of America.
Filipino Surfers Triumph on Home Turf
The Filipino surfers dominated the waves, securing major victories and reinforcing La Union's reputation as a top surfing destination. In an extraordinary display of skill and determination, John Mark "Marama" Tokong claimed the Men's Shortboard Division title by defeating Swedish surfer Kian Martin. The Women's Shortboard division witnessed Japanese surfer Kana Nakashio emerge victorious against compatriot Sara Wakita.
Adding to the Filipino success story, Rogelio "Jay-R" Esquivel, Jr. achieved back-to-back glory by winning the Men's Longboard Division, mirroring his triumph in 2023. The Women's Longboard title went to Kaede Inoue of Japan, who outshone her competition, including Hiroka Yoshikawa.
Each winner was rewarded with $5600 and 3,000 points for the next regional tour, potentially leading to Olympic qualification.
Beyond Glory: Economic Benefits and Global Recognition
This international exposure not only strengthens the Philippines' position in the global surfing community but also enhances the tourism appeal of La Union. The event contributes to the economic growth of the region, attracting both local and international visitors, and opening doors for athletes to showcase their talent on the world stage.
