Taytay, officially the Municipality of Taytay, is a 1st class urban municipality in Rizal, Philippines. Often called the Garments Capital of the Philippines, this unassuming town has undergone a remarkable transformation into a fashion powerhouse. How did this change come about?

Crafting a Legacy

Taytay’s journey into the world of garments is deeply rooted in its history of craftsmanship. Traditionally, Taytay was known for its skilled artisans—whether in woodworking or sewing. Historically, men were the primary breadwinners, leaving women to manage household tasks. However, as times changed, women in Taytay began to harness their sewing skills, initially out of necessity and later as a means of income.

Starting from humble beginnings, these women set up small sewing spaces in their homes. What began as a simple way to earn extra money evolved into a significant business opportunity. Local wealthier families noticed the potential and provided more resources, such as fabrics and sewing machines, to scale up production. This partnership helped Taytay’s homegrown talents expand their reach beyond local markets, eventually reaching places like Divisoria, Baclaran, and Pasig.

The pivotal moment came in 2008 when Taytay’s local garment vendors were given their own official marketplace—a Tiangge. This venue became the heartbeat of Taytay’s garment industry.

The Tiangge Transformation

The establishment of the Taytay Municipal Tiangge marked a new era for the town. It wasn’t just a marketplace; it was a catalyst for economic growth. The formalization of what had once been informal businesses led to a surge in small business registrations. The Tiangge became synonymous with affordable, quality clothing, drawing both local shoppers and tourists.

This transformation was more than just economic. It solidified Taytay’s position as a key player in the Philippine fashion industry, making it a sought-after destination for those in search of budget-friendly yet stylish garments.
