After nearly 50 years, Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila will close its doors and stop operations on July 1. The decision was taken as part of the hotel's "ongoing commitment" to give its guests the "best possible experience," according to a statement released.

The hotel will honor reservations and engagements through the end of June, per the statement.

High caliber hotel

The hotel was hailed as the first of its kind in the Philippines by the Forbes travel guide, which awarded it a four-star rating for 2024.

"With gorgeous landscapes, lavish contemporary interiors and indulgent spa, it’s no wonder it’s often the hotel of choice of visiting VIPs, from former U.S. President Barack Obama to the Queen of Pop Madonna," according to Forbes in its review of the property.

Leandro Locsin and Ildefonso P. Santos, two national artists, designed the Sofitel in 1976.

Premium hotel choice

“Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila had a long legacy as the hotel of choice for almost five decades for heads of states, celebrities and global corporations alike, and it has been home to celebrations and milestones of our beloved patrons and clients,” the multinational hospitality company Accor said.

In 2006, Accor, which had purchased the Sofitel name in the 1980s, assumed control of the resort and hotel located on Manila Bay, renaming it the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila.

The multi-awarded buffet restaurant Spiral Manila can also be found inside the opulent hotel.
