Meralco is adding more power capacity in Bulacan as electricity demand continues to rise across one of the country’s fastest-growing provinces.
The utility has energized its new 50-megavolt ampere (MVA) Bustos Substation, a project designed to strengthen electricity distribution for customers in Baliwag City and the municipalities of Bustos, Angat and San Rafael.
The additional capacity comes as more homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and commercial establishments place greater demands on the local power network.
Behind the New Bustos Substation
The project includes a 50-MVA power transformer bank, three 69-kilovolt gas circuit breakers and six 69-kV disconnect switches. Meralco also built a new 69-kV sub-transmission line and a control house equipped with 13.8-kV indoor modular switchgear.
For consumers, these may sound like technical details. The bigger picture is simpler: Meralco now has more capacity to distribute electricity in a growing part of Bulacan.
The project is part of the utility's broader effort to expand and modernize its distribution network as electricity requirements increase.
Four Areas, One Bigger Power Network
The Bustos Substation is intended to strengthen the distribution network serving customers in these areas. However, that does not necessarily mean every household, business or institution in the four areas will be directly supplied by the new substation.
Electricity networks work through interconnected substations, transformers, feeders and transmission lines.
For example, previous documents have identified Bulacan State University's Bustos campus as being served through Meralco's Baliwag-3 Substation. This shows why being located within the broader service area does not automatically mean an establishment is directly connected to a particular substation.
Still, adding capacity can give the overall network more room to handle demand and manage power flows.
Powering More Than Just Homes
Meralco said the added capacity will support major institutions and commercial establishments in the area, including Baliwag District Hospital, Bulacan State University, National University Baliwag, WalterMart Baliwag and SM City Baliwag.
That matters because these facilities depend heavily on reliable electricity.
Hospitals need continuous power for essential operations. Schools rely on electricity for classrooms, laboratories and digital services. Meanwhile, malls and commercial establishments operate large lighting, cooling and equipment systems.
The new capacity is therefore more about strengthening the network that serves these communities than simply giving each establishment a new power source.
What It Can't Fix
A new substation can improve distribution capacity and network flexibility, but it does not guarantee that power interruptions will disappear. Brownouts can still result from severe weather, damaged power lines, equipment failures, accidents, or scheduled maintenance.
The project also does not automatically mean lower electricity bills. Its main purpose is to increase capacity and strengthen the distribution network, not reduce electricity rates.
Will the 50-MVA Substation Really Help?
Power infrastructure is easy to overlook because consumers rarely see what happens behind the switch.
But electricity capacity becomes increasingly important as communities grow. Meralco's 50-MVA Bustos Substation is one piece of that bigger picture.
In the long run, this added capacity helps ensure more stable and reliable electricity service as Bulacan continues to expand. It also strengthens the province’s readiness for future demand from homes, businesses, and emerging developments.
