After this month's National Learning Camp (NLC), the capital of Negros Oriental's Department of Education (DepEd) is hopeful about higher competency levels among students in elementary and high school.

The learning camp officially started on July 2 and has about 8,000 enrolled basic education, junior high, and senior high school students in Dumaguete and nearby areas.

“The NLC is a national program to address the learning gaps of our learners with three separate camps on intervention, enhancement, and collaboration,” said Dr. Juditha Mapue, head of the City Schools Division's curriculum implementation department.

Enhancing teachers and students

All 25 DepEd elementary and high schools in Dumaguete participated in the three-week NLC, which is a simultaneous program run across the country.

The program, which focuses on reading and numeracy, is intended for students who have not quite attained their competency level in a particular subject.

The program also incorporated enhancement and collaboration intended to improve the abilities of students who perform better academically.

Students physically attend classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until July 19.

Not just for students

The camp's teachers will set out time on Mondays and Fridays for "collaborative expertise," which includes exchanging best practices and preparing materials, to improve each other’s teaching capacity.

For 15 days, teachers will receive service credits in addition to a PHP 250 daily lunch allowance.

Fun-filled extracurricular activities were promised by the program in addition to classroom training.
