Around 300 participants are expected to attend the 2nd Mindanao Mango Congress, which will be held in Davao City from Aug. 12 to 14, according to the Department of Agriculture in Davao Region (DA-11).

The three-day event aims to promote the sustainable growth of the country's mango industry through technical sessions, expert discussions, exhibits, and live demonstrations of modern farming technologies, including drone spraying and climate-smart agricultural practices.

DA-11 said the congress also seeks to improve farmers' livelihoods, encourage value-adding innovations, and strengthen the Philippines' position in the global mango export market.

Davao Among the Country's Top Mango Producers

The agency said Davao Region produces around 70,000 to 80,000 metric tons of mangoes every year, making it one of the country's leading mango-producing areas.

The congress will bring together mango growers, researchers, agricultural experts, private companies, and government agencies to discuss the industry's biggest challenges, exchange best practices, and develop strategies that will support the sector's long-term growth.

Focus on Increasing Production

Benedicto Alvez, chair of the Davao Region Integrated Mango Agribusiness Council and head of the sectoral committee on mango, said increasing production remains a top priority for the industry.

He emphasized the need to improve farm productivity while addressing problems such as pests, diseases, and rising production costs.

"Our priority is to increase mango output by improving farm productivity and addressing pests, diseases, and production costs. Market demand alone is not enough if we don't have enough produce to sell," Alvez said.

Organizers added that the congress will also provide opportunities for participants to build partnerships, exchange ideas, and explore innovations that can further boost the competitiveness and growth of the Philippine mango industry.
