After a temporary closure of nearly two weeks caused by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake and Tropical Storm Kabayan, the renowned Enchanted River of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur has officially reopened to the public on December 30. The closure, which occurred twice in December and spanning a total of 20 days, aimed to ensure visitor safety and conduct necessary clearing operations.

“The reopening of Enchanted River is a much-awaited event, especially for tourists from other areas in Mindanao,” said Gemma Millan, Hinatuan Tourism Operations Officer II.

The first closure, lasting from December 4 to 11, was in response to the earthquake's impact. Subsequently, Tropical Storm Kabayan prompted a second closure from December 18 to 29. The closures resulted in estimated revenue losses of around P1.5 to P2 million, representing unrealized tourist receipts during December, a peak tourism month for the destination.

Protected Ecotourism Site

Enchanted River, a protected underwater cave, charges entrance fees of P100 for tourists and P30 for local residents. Closed for several months in 2017 to ensure sustainability, it has been developed into the Hinatuan Enchanted River Underwater Cave System (Herucs). The crystal-clear water in the large lagoon changes color, creating a unique ecological area.

Improved Management and Safety Measures

To enhance safety and environmental sustainability, the municipal government implemented an improved management and zoning plan for Herucs. Measures include prohibiting swimmers from clinging to the walls and jumping off cliffs near the cave entrance. These precautions aim to prevent debris from limestone cliffs and walls from blocking the underwater opening of the cave. Fishing activities along the river's route leading to Herucs' primary visitors' area were also strictly prohibited.

Things to Experience at Enchanted River

Fish Feeding and Cultural Presentation - Caretakers navigate a boat to the deeper, bluer part of the river. It's not just about feeding the fish; it's also a ritual to appease the river spirits. This marks the beginning of the cultural segment at Enchanted River, where visitors receive informative insights before witnessing an impressive fish-feeding show.

Swimming - A designated area in the river allows visitors to swim. Although not as deep as the bluish section leading to the underwater cave, it's essential for visitors to wear a life vest for safety.

Seafood Dining - For lunch, there's a specific area located about a mile away from Enchanted River. Interestingly, it's situated before entering the Enchanted River premises, signaling the beginning of the river area. This strategic placement ensures that eateries are relatively distant from the river, preventing waste dumping into its pristine waters.
