Situated in Mindanao's southernmost region is a little-known gem – Basilan’s Malamawi Island.

The island of Malamawi in Basilan is full of undiscovered treasures which is complemented by its breathtaking beauty and allure.

Located in Isabela City, Malamawi Beach is among the top beaches in the province of Basilan. Similar to the white beach in Boracay, it has a lengthy white sand coastline and turquoise waters.

Hidden gem

While the island is largely undeveloped, notwithstanding the odd cottages here and there, its beauty is undeniable.

When visiting Malamawi for the first time, one quickly realizes that most jewels may be found on less-used routes. Beyond the lengthy expanse of white sand is a concrete pier perpendicular to the shoreline that showcases crystal-pure blue water.

The walk towards the finish is lined with vibrant flags and has a triangular roof where people may take pictures with the clouded sky and the deep blue sea horizon as their background.

Island’s richness

One of the island's advantages is the abundant aquatic life and coral reefs below. The vibrant reefs and abundance of fish make the dip worthwhile.

When visitors bring snorkels and paddle fins to explore the sea, they see a part of Philippine beauty that’s rarely touched.

However, most people would choose to relax on the white sand beach and take in the fresh air blowing from the coconut trees, or they would want to gaze up at the clear sky.

How to get there

The entry point to Isabela City and Malamawi Island is in Zamboanga City. Fast boats and ferries travel daily between Zamboanga City Port and Isabela City, departing as early as 6:30 AM and returning as late as 4:45 PM.

Tourists should walk from the Isabela port to the Malamawi Island pump boat terminal. Motorbikes are available on Malamawi Island to transport tourists to Malamawi Beach.

Plastics, among other things, are also prohibited to keep the island’s environment from being polluted.
